The Great Digital Divide (and what YOU can do about it).
The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has coerced us to adjust to the norms of social distancing and impacted billions of people. The effects of this drastic event have affected the education of approximately 400 million school-going students and brought their world into a standstill. The concept of online classes and teaching has been quickly ushered into this scenario, but it fails to address the great “digital divide” that has occurred as a result of pre-embedded gender and class divide. Students from lower-income backgrounds are not equipped with e-learning solutions and devices (a laptop/smartphone and an internet connection), and the potential of these young learners remains untapped.
Not only does it take away their right to education, but also traps them into a life of hardship and missed opportunities. The youth of today gives rise to the society of tomorrow and hence, their impeded progress and lack of access to basic education is a matter of grave concern.
